Breaking The Formulaic Boundaries Of Fall Layering
Why hide a flannel button down under a sweater?

Never underestimate the power of fall layering.
As the light filled days quickly begin to dwindle and warm summer days and crop tops become a faint memory, our thoughts naturally go to layering. It’s a time when the formulaic boundaries of natural layers become broken and any pairing is fair game.
Fall is just a time where not only designers within the confines of their runways can experiment with multiple layering possibilities, but the wearers, too, can actually experience it. Getting on as many layers as possible without looking 5 pounds bulkier becomes a fairly salient theme of the season. Blazers, jackets, cardigans, knits, turtlenecks and scarves all participate in our morning dressing match.
Here I’m layering a cashmere sweater, with a plaid button down and a leather-sleeved bomber jacket worn with leather joggers and fringed suede kicks. A button down is the one piece of clothing that’s truly transitional. I quite enjoy putting a button down over a sweater and can look in the mirror with unwavering confidence that this pairing is so very “me.” While a shirt worn under a knit has its timeless charm, I find it less practical during fall. Not only does wearing the shirt over a sweater help fight the battle of the fall layering bulge, it also becomes more of a functional pairing.
While exploring Saratoga Springs last weekend I experienced three dramatic temperature changes in one day. The morning was crisp and comfortable, the afternoon warm and the evening chilly and frosty. Pairing a lightweight cotton button down over my sweater actually made all the difference in allowing me to get through this spastic fall day.
After walking around a bit in the morning I found I was able to take off my bomber and just leaving on the button-down shirt over the sweater. Towards the late afternoon when the weather got a bit warmer I took off the button down and tied around my waist, before piling it all back on after dinner.
And of course no day filled with exploring and fall layering is complete without a great watch. This Seiko timepiece is helping me keep track of the dwindling and fleeting season of change. It also auto updates as you change time zones . Because let’s face it, I need to seriously watch the clock and plan out all my fall layering options before all anyone can see walking down the street is a fur trimmed parka.
