Here’s Why You Should Be Wearing Stripes Right Now

Stripes are to spring what black is to winter – a staple neutral.

On this Monday morning I was doing that thing where I stare blankly into a full closet and denounce that I have nothing to wear. Through the nothingness I spotted my blue and white striped shirt.

Stripes are to spring what black is to winter – a staple neutral.

During the months of spring in New York City when anything seems possible you may try to consider that something Polka dots or suede or fringe or plaid, I don’t know, little printed flamingos are a neutral. Or maybe even a solid leopard print. Let’s not even go there because it’s Monday and I don’t have enough energy to talk about leopard.

But what about wearing stripes? Stripes are that great neutral that can really be worn with anything. They could be horizontal or vertical or fragmented or whatever.

Then, of course, there came the James Dean’s and Elvis Presley’s  of the world, who seemed to emanate that sense of, “So you can’t quite approximate my full bad boy stare or conversely fluent-looking pompadour? No problem. Approximate our shirts.”

Today I’m going for this Nautica striped shirt that recalls warm summer beach days. It is going to be 80 degrees today after all, so it may also be physic.
