Jaden Smith, Accidental Style Icon Or Fussy Teenager?
Or dilettante philosopher?
02 . 28 . 15
Here’s the thing about Jaden Smith’s style – it prevails where none other can because it is one of the few that keeps the wheels of the fashion, the imagination – and therefore shopping – in motion.
We live in a time when teenagers are progressively too cool for school and attract more attention then the likes of living icons such as Meryl Streep and Johnny Dep. Apparently no one cares what Meryl is wearing to a family wedding or on the weekend. Or to hook up with her husband. Instead, has it essentially become our 21st century answer to the age-old complaint of under-thirty-somethings everywhere: I’m bored. Or is it the allure of these teens acting more confident at 16 then us at 26?
Jaden Smith’s style carries the self-confidence and freedom of expression we all should have. It seems to say, “I took Philosophy 101 and sometimes enjoy going out in public dressed like my favorite superhero.”
So great are the moments I have attempted to enlist the unwitting help of Jaden Smith in getting dressed, but so scarce have the successful executions been. Blame it on my lack of comic book sartorial choices.
Pants are optional, masks and crop tops are not.
Perhaps our differences lie in my lack of ability to be fresh and literal, (cut to Jaden’s upcoming album title, This Is An Album.)
The kid has style. This cannot be denied. Perhaps it only takes 16 years of life for one to accumulate enough confidence, swagger and smugness to truly appreciate imaginative style with an edgy charm. Or is Jaden Smith just a shinny and arrogant gem?
You decide.

Because, let’s be real here, people. We’re not nearly as cool as the clothes suggest we are.
