When the ’80s and menswear combine it has power greater then the merger of Earth, wind, fire, water and heart.

From the billowy, double-breasted, navy suits to AC Slater in a crop top, ‘80s men’s fashion is an endless punchbowl of inspiration. Mullets and watercolor ties aside, ‘80s looks were what we admired before the ‘90s had that sense of nostalgic magic it does today. It was a pre Clueless world. They’re 4 particular type of looks that come to mind when discussing what men wore in the ‘80s. And they go as follows: aerobic gear, office threads, casual wear and everything denim.
Step aerobics was the Soul Cycle of the ‘8os and spawned wonderfully spastic gear to go along with it. Today they’re a laundry list of designers who are stitching together sporty looks keeping this era in mind. I particularly love the creative’s who opt to leave out the convulsive color combinations. British streetwear fashion label Money’s collaboration with designer Bobby Abley for Spring 2015 is one of my favorite current offerings. The joint effort offers an array of gym gear with covered in Disney imagery with a 80s sensibility.
Reviving a formal ‘80s outfit today can be tricky without looking like you stepped out of Wall Street circa 1984 when men drenched in pinstripes, chunky gold Rolex watches, Gucci loafers and a giant silk ties roamed the streets of lower Manhattan. Think Leonardo Decaprio in the “Wolf Of Wall Street”. Actually don’t. Instead, play with slightly boxy silhouettes in a unique monochromatic palette. Allow one piece to pop. Maybe it’s a pair of bright purple pants? Here model Victor Petit poses in Prada for the most recent edition of Commons & Sense Man magazine.
When I think of lounge-y 80s fashion my mind goes to almost every movie made during that decade. The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back To The Future, the list goes on for days. In every one of these examples a range of baggy sweaters, immaculate and chic high-waisted trousers, papery leather and more baggy sweaters showed face. Today when trying a fresh take on ‘80s tinged causal offerings, go for contrasting textures. And don’t be afraid of a well tailored pleated pant.
You can’t possibly think of ‘80s satire without the consideration of denim. Acid washed denim splashed with paint to be exact. Dior Homme’s latest Spring 2015 offering revealed at the men’s shows in Paris was a luxurious example complete with bright crayon squiggles. Andres Velencoso Segura delivered a sexy editorial take on the look for the September 2014 issue of GQ Portugal. If you don’t want to wait around for the Dior collection to hit shops, grab snug fitted light wash denim and a couple of paint markers and let loose.
