A Fashionable Woman’s View Of The Modern Man

…but what does “modern” even mean?

The top menswear trends of the moment can be difficult to master. Never fear, Oyster Colored Velvet’s resident fashionable woman is here to help you nail them.

Wool

Once seen as a material reserved for grandmothers knitting, wool is now the fashionable material of the moment. We aren’t expecting you to adopt Sibling’s pink wool teddy bears but knitwear doesn’t have to be boring. Wool is incredibly versatile and as designers showed us this season, it can be woven and worn in many different ways. Public School, winners of the International Woolmark Prize, created wool tracksuits. Lou Dalton used merino wool in tailored jackets. Take some inspiration and update your look with a finely knitted wool scarf or a lightweight jumper.

 Socks

Chic socks

You socks should not be an afterthought. They are not items you can scrabble around in the bottom of your drawers for and put on carelessly at the last minute. They should feature neither a novelty print nor holes. Your socks are part of your look as a whole and trust me, women notice these details. You may think your socks aren’t visible but when you trouser leg rides up they most certainly do! This season try a pair in a playful colour or subtle print, in good quality cotton or cashmere.

The 70s

The 1970s we all about wearing carefully planned outfits that looked effortlessly thrown together. This season, from Topman Design to Prada, the decade was woken by designers seeking inspiration. Flared jeans may be taking this trend a little too literally, not to mention you might scare women off, but try a washed denim jacket or a lightweight boxy-style jacket for a relaxed weekend look.

Prints

The AW15 shows saw a lot of prints. From muted, low-key prints to bold checks and stripes, the possibilities to experiment are endless. If you are a print-wearing beginner try a patterned pocket square. New menswear brand Rosemary Goodenough offer some bold designs, and James Middleton, the brother of Princess Kate Middleton, recently wore one of Rosemary Goodenough’s designs on his first ever magazine cover for The Young Director. Richard James are also doing some statement pieces in luxurious Italian silk.

Statement Footwear

This season wow women with your shoes. Coloured shoes can be tricky to get right but if you are feeling brave pair some brightly-coloured suede brogues, in perhaps a bright blue or autumnal orange, with a dark-toned outfit, like a navy suit. If you want a statement shoe that is a little less eye-catching then try a coloured or contrasting sole as seen by Ermenegildo Zegna. Alternatively take inspiration from Gucci and try fringing detail.
