Vivienne Westwood Shows A New Kind Of Unisex Dressing In Pairs

Vivienne Westwood delivered a bold lineup for her fall 2015 collection all while reversing gender roles. But this wasn’t about androgyny. It was sculpting traditionally feminine shapes to the male body. 

The show certainly gave Paris something to talk about.

Tunics and dresses for men, the same dresses that woman wore, were squeezed onto her male cast. It might be true that a $50 knock off can steal an idea, but it can’t quite swipe the bones that got it there.

Both genders walked the runway in oversized tailored jackets with pointed shoulders, dresses and mini skirts with their faces plastered in doodles by legendary make-up artist Val Garland.

I have never much cared for the clothing of Vivienne Westwood, (that may be a tiny fib considering I do own that illusion crop top by the designer,) but in the new age of wearable, high fashion divorced from the etiquette and frills that once defined the elitist world, this collection may have proven that if you thought the designer was just about making a bold cultural statement with no place in the present, you were wrong. But then again, sales will tell.

Highlighted by a selection of structural dresses and combative, boxy suits set in pale grey colors reflected by puncher versions of in darker hues. A standout item was the “bisexual” — as Westwood called them — Hawaiian hula skirts – giving a whole new meaning to swinging any way the wind blows.

The closing  look, a dress worn by a ripped male model with white and gold embellishments and grey trousers, though, which looked heavy and forceful — demanding a level of strength from its wearer.
