After almost 20 years of avoiding jerseys, I’ve finally figured out my favorite way to dress for a team I’m pretending to rout for. The biggest revelation: just go casual and don’t try too hard.  It’s all about the balance, the wabi-sabi, the yin and yang, if you will, of getting dressed.

Wearing a jersey outside of a sports arena can be quite the challenging task. You run the risk of looking like a goofy (goofier) version of Adam Sandler from the 90s. But it is possible to rock this look with swag.

Justin Bieber, who is currently on his ‘Purpose‘ tour, turned out the sports fan look at the iHeartRadio Music Awards schooling everyone on how to pull off a little red carpet rebellion. Bieber showed off his talent for elevated athleisure opting for the real thing. Pairing an actual New York Rangers jersey with Fear of God’s distressed jeans and futuristic thick-soled sneakers.

We’ve seen runway items reinterpret team jerseys. Think back to Rodarte and Tom Ford, they reworked the humble sports jersey into an cool piece – we are looking at you Jay Z and Beyonce. Bieber’s look represents one of those rare occasions when wearing a real jersey acutely looks fresh.

Think of your jersey as more than just an loud expression of your loyalty — it’s an accessory. Fun, right? But most importantly, get one that fits.
