The Internet is a strange place. Home to one hype after another, the web can upgrade a hashtag into a viral story. Nobody’s safe – even our mum’s took the plunge for the Ice Bucket Challenge, but hopefully not for the #cockinasock hype. Internet crazes come and go but get set for the next onslaught. It’s time to pucker up and meet the #kyliejennerchallenge.
Social media has been awash with trout pouted teens. Fans of Kylie Jenner have resorted to DIY lip jobs in attempts to emulate her puffy pout. The technique involves sucking on bottle caps or shot glasses to create an airlock, causing the lips to swell. An alternative to the CandyLipz device the star was gifted in a goody bag, it seemed to good to be true and was just that. End results are far from ideal – lips look inflated and bruising around the mouth doesn’t scream sex appeal.
No pain no gain. Some #kyliejennerchallenge cases even required medical treatment because the shot glasses aren’t flexible like the CandyLipz device, so they break under the pressure and cause injuries that require stitches. Thankfully, the majority of results only last for a few hours but some unhappy Instagrammers endured side effects for several days.
The star has voiced out about the trend. The 17-year-old tweeted yesterday: ‘I’m not here to try & encourage people/young girls to look like me or to think this is the way they should look.’
She later added: ‘I want to encourage people/young girls like me to be YOURSELF & not be afraid to experiment w your look.’ How she achieved her oversized pout remains a mystery but you can’t blame others for trying. Some families have it all – one Kardashian has huge lips and another has a sizeable behind. The rest of us should make the most of what our momma’s gave us.
Every cloud has a silver lining. It seems unlikely this trend will pick up the momentum of its predecessors since celebrities haven’t jumped on the bandwagon.
